IWIF/SERMA has a specialized team of risk management professionals dedicated exclusively to improving workplace safety at Maryland's state agencies. We provide risk management/safety services to state agencies through a unit of SERMA Risk Management Consultants (RMCs). The role of the SERMA RMC is to provide safety services to State agencies in a partnered effort to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses. Each RMC is assigned to specific agencies that have similar exposures and hazards to allow for the sharing of best practices between agencies and facilities.
Consultation on workplace safety-related issues and concerns;
Provide action plans and recommendations to improve safety programs (hazard communication, respiratory protection, etc);
Interpretation of safety regulations and their application;
Independent assessments on potential changes that could make a workplace safer (process evaluations, ergonomics and hazard assessment walkthroughs);
Access to library of video and online safety training at no cost to State agencies;
Train-the-trainer type activities such as accident investigation, back safety, defensive driving, hazard communication, workers' comp best practices, etc.;
Annual SERMA Conference and safety/claims management workshops;
Provide safety awareness materials: General and agency-specifics safety posters, fliers, videos, training tools, PowerPoint presentations, etc.;
Participation in training days and in-service activities for state agencies;
Gather and disseminate information between agencies to control and prevent injuries when like hazards or exposures are present;
Supply claims and trending data and information on how facilities are performing with regards to various workers compensation issues;
Participation in safety committee meetings;
Coordinate customized claims meetings; and
Assist in agency compliance with SERMA Executive Order.
Program Development – We provide sample policies and procedures to assist in the
development of a sound risk management program.
Program Evaluation – We evaluate policies and procedures and make recommendations to enhance current programs.
Risk Assessment Survey – We conduct on-site inspections and make recommendations to eliminate physical hazards and unsafe behaviors.
Risk Analysis and Loss Review – We analyze your agency’s claims cost history to identify accident trends in order to make recommendations for improvements.
Training Sessions and Educational Programs – These are provided to management and employees to promote safety in the workplace.
Ergonomics – We can also examine the physical requirements of a job so it can be fit to the worker’s physical capacity.
Industrial Hygiene – our team is able to recognize, evaluate, and help control environmental factors or biological and chemical stresses arising in or from the workplace.
